Can road stormwater ponds be successfully exploited by the European green frog (Pelophylax sp.)?

چکیده

Stormwater ponds (“SWPs”) are artificial roadside structures, conceived to retain and clean polluted runoff water, before its release the environment. SWPs were not designed as suitable habitats for wildlife. However, in Europe frequently used breeding sites by amphibians, especially European green frog (Pelophylax sp.). Yet, potential long-term effects of pollutants within on populations this species unknown. In study, we investigated suitability a habitat frogs living Alsace, NE France, region with highly modified landscape that mainly consists croplands few natural wetlands remaining. We compared various biological indicators individual health 709 belonging different life history stages, 9 semi-natural (SNPs) 25 SWPs. There no differences between these two pond types most investigated. juveniles had lower body condition (?124%) SWPs, while adults 8.3% larger 41.4% heavier Based results, suggest development (i.e. juveniles), but may serve substitute act relay sites, allowing colonize relict wetlands.

The Hydraulic Efficiency of Simple Stormwater Ponds

This paper investigates the hydrodynamic characteristics of nine stormwater pond configurations. These ponds represent an extension of earlier work by Persson (1999) who proposed the thirteen pond configurations currently used as a guide in the hydrodynamic component of the Cooperative Research Centre for Catchment Hydrology (CRCCH) Model for Urban Stormwater Improvement Conceptualisation (MUSI...

Transductive Learning via Model Selection; Can Overfitting be Exploited?

A novel transductive learning algorithm is proposed, which is based on the use of model selection. In its simplest form there are k possible labels, m labeled points and one unlabeled point. One model is built for each possible classification of the unlabeled point yM+1 = Li, i = 1, ..., k, using all m+1 points and m + 1 labels. Any standard model selection criterion can then be applied to sele...

Can the two mechanisms of tumor cell killing by radiation be exploited for therapeutic gain?

The radiation killing of tumor cells by ionizing radiation is best described by the linear-quadratic (LQ) model. Research into the underlying mechanisms of α- and β-inactivation has suggested that different molecular targets (DNA in different forms) and different microdosimetric energy deposits (spurs versus electron track-ends) are involved. Clinical protocols with fractionated doses of about ...

Does Diarrhoea Causes Cataract? Can Cataract be Prevented by Aspirin?

Loss of transparency of the lens is termed cataract which is one of the commonest causes of blindness throughout the world. This major health problem appears to be much commoner in many developing countries such as India and Pakistan, where it causes visual disability at a substantially earlier age and several hypotheses have been put forward to explain this higher prevalence in these areas. Re...
